Expecting Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur is a bit of a mystery to some people. And I dare say, even to some KL-ites. The city chugs along wondrously despite occasional hiccups along the way, leaving us wondering how she manages to keep all her people sane. The madness of this city somehow works and we are all the better for it.
Now, if you are heading to Kuala Lumpur for the very first time, forget the stories you may have heard from friends of friends, the news or worse still – people who have never been to this side of Asia. Instead, go forth and explore the city with an open mind, lots of heart and bring a healthy dose of humour.
Food, Food and More Food
Seriously. What is not to love about food? More so if it is AMAZINGLY delicious food! Truth be told, it is a serious pursuit for a lot of us here. So, be prepared to come to terms with the insane amount of street food, cafés, posh restaurants and even fast food joints. Whatever you fancy, this city serves it up to you with aplomb.
Traffic Insanity
Traffic in Kuala Lumpur is a living, breathing beast. When you least expect it, it will tear you down. That is not to say that you can never go out. It just means you would need to plan your excursions better to avoid peak-hour traffic. Better still, take the very efficient trains that go in and around the city.
Be Alert, Be Safe
The best piece of advice I ever got about travelling solo was “do what you would normally do in your own city” – be aware of your belongings, do not venture into dark streets or alleyways, etc. I roam about the city on my own quite a bit and that piece of advice has helped me navigate my way safely.
Friendly Help
We Malaysians are generally a friendly bunch. So, do not be shy about asking for help. There may be a few of us who tend to be lost in our smartphones, but don’t let that get you down. You could kick them to the curb. I kid! Anyway, we will always be able to help you out, one way or another.
Kuala Lumpur is one of those cities that can’t help but get in your face. She is bustling yet peaceful, energetic yet calm, magical yet real and the cause for a whole host of other feelings. Obviously, just like any other city in this great big world, we do have our fair share of problems (heat wave, anyone?) Despite this, the city has a type of charm that will get to you.
The great Sammy Davis Jr. once said “There are certain romances that belong in certain cities, in a certain atmosphere, in a certain time.” Experience Kuala Lumpur for yourself; you may just find your own romance.
